One of the Best Episodes of the Fourth Season

10/10
Author: Claudio Carvalho from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
1 July 2006

On the eve of Smallville High Prom, the bitch candidate to Prom Queen Dawn Stiles (Beatrice Rosen) crashes her car and falls off a cliff near to a pile of kryptonite. Her soul leaves her body and incorporates Martha Kent's, and sooner she realizes that she can switch bodies by any contact. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor finds the corpse of Bridgette Crosby in his property and Jason Teagues decides to call Sheriff Nancy Adams.

"Spirit" recalled Denzel Washington's "Fallen", with a spirit able to switch bodies by contact, and it is one of the best episodes of the Fourth Season of "Smallville". The relationship of Jason with his mother becomes clearer, and Lana Lang ends this episode closer to Clark. My vote is ten.

Title (Brazil): "O Espírito" ("The Spirit")

A really fun installment from a rather weak season!

9/10

Season Four of "Smallville" was more of a transitional one in that it didn't possess the excellent writing that had been evident in the previous three seasons.

However, if the rest of the shows had had the element of "fun" that "Spirit" had, the season could have been more memorable.

The real fun of this installment is the deft impersonations each of the principle actors do as they are "possessed" by the spirit of Dawn Stiles, played by guest star Beatrice Rosen. Watching the motherly Martha Kent (Annette O'Toole) cavorting around like a teenager while jamming to the sounds on her I-Pod is priceless. The line she utters at The Talon is unexpected but appropriate for the stuck up Stiles.

As the spirit bounces from character to character, it's a true treat to see how Kristen Kreuk, Allison Mack, and, even Tom Welling interpret the character.

This is an outstanding entry in the long-running show and is one that stands as a shining star in a season that didn't have as many "glowing ones" as earlier and succeeding seasons.

The third-worst episode of Season 4

6/10

A lame storyline accompanies this filler episode.

Senior girl Dawn Stiles is desperate to go to the prom, and become prom beauty queen. However, her plans are stifled when her boyfriend dumps her. She must find a new boyfriend! While searching the yearbook for a new boy to take her, she drives into a ravine off the side of the road and dies. However, due to being exposed to high concentrations of kryptonite, her spirit lives on and possesses people via touch. She works through an assortment of bodies, including Martha and Lana, before taking Chloe's body to become beauty queen. Clark isn't able to recognize this discrepancy until late in the dance during the prom queen acceptance speech.

This story is very weak, and along with 'Fierce' of Season 7 belongs in Season 1 among all of the 'meteor freak'-themed episodes. While many of those episodes are good, this one certainly isn't. The only truly positive thing to take out of this episode, if you're sappy or a girl, is that Lana arrives in the nick of time to the prom to have one special dance with Clark, despite their many differences that has ended their relationship (for now). This is the worst episode of Season 4 after 'Spell' and 'Unsafe.'
