While returning home with Lois, Martha is hit by a flash of light followed by a thunder and contracts a lethal Kryptonian disease. Clark fears that Jor-El thus makes him pay for his resuscitation and asks for help from Professor Milton Fine, who tells Clark that Jor-El was a dictator on Krypton, who destroyed their great leader General Zod and the planet but sent Clark to Earth to dominate the world; the death of Martha would only be prevented by destroying the Fortress of Solitude. Meanwhile, Lionel convinces Chloe to investigate who Milton Fine really is. When Lois, feeling offended because Lex called her a "muffin peddler", meets Chloe, the double visits LuthorCorp., where the truth is revealed: Professor Milton Fine is actually a Kryptonian artificial intelligence unit, created by Jor-El but re-programed and corrupted by the Kryptonian rebel General Zod, who was executed for treason, and had his spirit banished to the hell-dimension of the Phantom Zone. Fine, a ... Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Did You Know?

This technically marks the first appearance of General Zod, Jor-El's greatest enemy, on the series. However, he only appears briefly in the distance. Terence Stamp, who supplies the voice of Jor-El in Smallville (2001), played Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). See more »

Lois Lane: Don't take this the wrong way, but after eight-hundred pictures, you don't get any prettier.
Lex Luthor: [to photo staff] That's enough. Thanks, guys.
Lex Luthor: [to Lois] How 'bout a latte?
Lois Lane: Don't you find this just a tad sleazy, holding a campaign photo shoot where Martha Kent works? You might as well, I don't know, go out to there farm and milk the cows.
Lex Luthor: [chuckles] In case you don't know where your paycheck comes from, I own the Talon.
Lois Lane: What don't you own? I guess now you wanna own the government.
Lex Luthor: Wow. Why are you so ...

Who is responsible for Martha's sickness?
1 December 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Clark Kent's mother Martha falls to a sickly ailment not from this world in the eighth episode of Season 5.

While outside the barn, Martha falls victim to a bright red light that causes a great sickness to come upon her. The doctors have no idea how to cure it, and it continues to get worse. Clark's Central Kansas U. world history professor Milton Fine, who is in fact Kryptonian, insists that it is Jor-El's doing, that he wants to destroy everything that Clark loves. Fine also tells Clark that Jor-El was an evil dictator on Krypton, intent on ruling the planet until he destroyed it, despite the attempts of the people's hero Zod to stop him. Fine tells Clark that Clark must destroy the Fortress of Solitude and rid of Jor-El forever to save his mother. But in fact, Clark learns that Fine reversed the story; Jor-El and General Zod had opposite roles, and Fine is Zod's minion who is trying to destroy Jor-El's memory and Clark's destiny and bring Zod to Earth. Clark realizes this in time to rid himself of Fine and his evil machinations... for now.

Throughout the "Smallville" series, some of the best episodes of the seasons have been the eighth, to excite the audience heading into a month of no new episodes. This episode was no different. We see the Fortress of Solitude for the second time, and come to know the truth about Milton Fine.
