He hires a team to bug the offices of Luthor Corp expecting to find the building empty since it is Sunday, but Lionel Luthor assigns Martha for work in his office with him. Jonathan becomes very upset, since it is their wedding anniversary, and he was planning a picnic with Martha. Lex calls off the action, but the leader of the group of industrial spies is killed by a member who wants to steal the contents of Lionel's safe. Martha and Lionel become hostages of the criminals, and when they open the safe, a great secret is disclosed. Quotes

Jonathan Kent: What's that?
Martha Kent: That's my resignation. There's no way I can keep working for Lionel. He had refined meteor rocks in his vault, a file on Clark. I can't believe I trusted him.
Clark Kent: And without that file, at least the police can't find out anything about me.
Martha Kent: To think I made this job such a big priority, and Lionel may have only hired me to learn more about Clark.
Clark Kent: I'm sorry, mom. I know how important your work has been to you.
Martha Kent: It's not more important than you.

An INCREDIBLE TV episode on its own, let alone 'Smallville'
19 September 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

With possibly the exception of the Season 1 finale "Tempest," Insurgence is the best 'Smallville' episode up to this point.

Another exciting element of this episode was that this was the first to present Metropolis, Superman's turf, to the watching audience.

Th show begins with an enraged Lex Luthor, who rightfully should be after discovering that his father has placed hidden cameras throughout the house in order to spy on his son. In retaliation, Lex plans an interrogation on the LuthorCorp building in Metropolis, believing that no one will be there with the interrogation planned on a Sunday. Coincidentally, however, Martha was asked by Lionel to work that day, upsetting her husband, who was planning a special anniversary event that day. Lex has seconds thoughts after learning that Martha is in the building, but before Lex can stop his team, one of the members, obsessed with what is in Lionel's sealed vault, holds up the building. Extreme tension builds between Jonathan and Lex, Jonathan and Lionel, and Clark and Lex, for the responsibility that the Luthors have on their hands for putting Martha in danger. As the episode nears its climactic and riveting conclusion, something incredible is revealed to have been hiding in the vault, and Clark, desperate to save his mother, goes to a drastic measure pushing even the limits of his unique abilities...

Standing on its own, 'Insurrection' is a very special episode for its tension, conflict and excitement.
