Crime boss Don Phillip Souza is incensed that Sledge's relentless efforts have greatly reduced possibilities for criminal activity and offers $1 million to anyone who can kill him. Luck, instinct, and circumstance combine to help Sledge narrowly avoid assassination attempts by various hit men and thugs. After one especially harrowing near-miss, a "Maninote" farmer and his daughter find Sledge unconscious in a field and take him back to their home. For a time, Sledge finds peace in the simple lifestyle and potential romance with the young woman. However, when Souza's men learn his whereabouts from a tap on Dori's phone, they launch an all-out assault on the farm. Sledge's hopes for survival depend on his ability to convince the peace-loving "Maninotes" to help him subdue the assassins and return to the city for a face-to-face confrontation with Souza.
