Amazing Shootouts In Minnesota & Oklahoma
19 August 2009 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This episode examines two "wild west" shootouts, concentrating more on one of them: the one in Minnesota. The second one is a famous battle in Oklahoma.

The first shootout is called "the mother of all shootouts" by the TV show's narrator. It involves two famous gangs - the Younger Gang and the James Gang. They were involved in a "robbery gone by bad" in Northfield, Minnesota in 1876.

As the show's narrator states, to some people the James gang has been glamorized over the years but the people in Northfield were never impressed and they didn't take kindly to people their robs with their money in it. When the robbery didn't go the robbers way, the town was out to greet them after they left the bank. This was a long and wild shootout. I won't spoil the show with details but it's very interesting. The story involves both the robbery attempt, shootout in the streets and posses hunting the robbers.

The second shootout occurred in 1893 in Ingallls, Okalahoma, where the residents were the opposite: friendly with the gangs, who had taken refuge in this town. This involved two other famous gangs, the Doolins and the Daltons. (Their leaders, by the way, both had the first name of Bill.) Anyway, in this gun battle which never got the publicity in deserved, lawman came from outside the town to get these notorious gang members. All I'll say is that turned out to be a bad mistake! A few of the very interesting general comments made this episode included: 1 - almost all gunfights were over money, ego, women and even dirty looks people, the most common problem being one that still exists today: alcohol; 2 - the combatants often were so close to each other that their clothes got on fire from the shots.

All in all, an interesting look at gunfights back in the 19th century and a look at some famous criminals.
