Sheriff of Cochise – Bank Robbery – 1957 This is an episode from the 117 episode run of the Police drama, Sheriff of Cochise. It was also known as U.S. Marshall during the last two seasons. It is a modern western with cars instead of horses.

John Bromfield headlines as the Sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona.

Two gunmen, Herb Patterson and Joe Kirk snatch the manager of the Bisbee bank just as the man is entering. They shuffle the man inside and have him open the safe. They grab the payroll for the local copper mine. They lock up the manager, Addison Richards, and quickly exit. By the time the Law is called, they have escaped.

Sheriff Bromfield and his Deputies set up roadblocks but it is too late. There has been a string of well-planned robberies throughout the State and the Police are baffled. There is always two men and they always wear a disguise.

Crooks, Patterson and Kirk are no dummies, they case a job for 3-4 days before striking. They know the local police response times etc.

Bromfield gets a break in the case, when two bank clerks in Cochise, see two suspicious men. The two are always outside the bank at the same time of the morning and afternoon.

Bromfield knows that this particular bank gets the payroll for the local army base. He has a undercover man keep an eye on the bank. Patterson and Kirk are of course the two suspicious types.

Bromfield gets the plate number off the car and does some checking on the two. They have no record so Bromfield can't pull them in for a chat. He continues to have the bank watched.

Patterson and Kirk smell a rat and decide to leave the bank alone. Instead, they hit the Bisbee bank a second time. They figure nobody would be watching out for a repeat hit.

Again, they grab Richards and force him to open the safe. This time Richards manages to hit the alarm buzzer. And as it would so happen, a Deputy is driving by. The gunmen flee the bank right into the arms of John Law. Gunfire is exchanged with the Deputy catching a round in his shoulder.

The Deputy though is successful in preventing Patterson and Kirk from reaching their car. Bromfield and the rest quickly arrive and some more rounds are traded.

Cornered in an alley like the rats they are, Patterson and Kirk give up the fight and come out.

Bromfield had roles in CRIME AGAINST JOE, SORRY WRONG NUMBER, THE BIG BLUFF and ROPE OF SAND.

The director was television veteran, Harve Foster. The d of p was fellow television vet, Henry Cronjager Jr. (b/w)
