What starts out as a day filled with the hope of borrowing the needed money for buying pigs the Starett's will need to get through the winter turns out to be a day of truths. After Ryker threatens to burn down the winter wheat, it's suddenly stampeded by a herd of Ryker's cattle. Shane sees no other way for the family to survive except to take a job with a group of gunfighters he's worked with before. Marian begs him not to take the job. She doesn't want blood money. We see a tougher side of Shane, and a surprising ending to this story. Written by
Shane, ever since you've been here you've been, I don't know, like some wild thing penned up, always hankering to get back to the wild ones again. Well, now you're going. And I truly hope you'll be happy. But be honest about it. Don't feel noble. If you sell that gun, it's not to help some poor widowed farmer to feed a fatherless boy, it's because you want to. It's because deep down inside you have to. And because at heart you're a killer!

You know, I love these old television shows! Sometimes we get to see a darker, more human side of people like we were able to see in this episode. Shane may be a hero, but he's just like everyone else! My favorite part is at the end when one of the gunfighters shouts out that it wasn't Ryker who harvested the wheat field - it was Johnny Wake! The look on Shane's face was PRICELESS!!! You can push Shane pretty far, but messing with the Starett's was going too far! I loved his comeback that he's keeping the six hundred dollars. Wake pretty much knows he's dead at this point. There's no way the other men are going to allow him to live. I'm not exactly sure why he wanted Shane to kill him instead of the others, except he thinks it would be less shameful or something...but GREAT ending!!! This is probably my favorite of the entire series.
