Ryker is ruthless!
mitchrmp5 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
this is one of the best Shane episodes. I loved the relationship established right off. Though Shane isn't the head of the house, he's the head of the house! In this episode, we see the "more than friends" relationship between Marian and Shane from the way they fight, to the way Shane father's Joey, to the way he takes care of the family. This pretty much sets up the mood for the entire series.

The fact that Ryker will go into a room where children are seated to drink is one hint that this man leaves a lot to be desired. But when his men started smashing up the place, that almost made me sick. This is a good story to begin the show with because it shows just what level Ryker will go to make sure his rules are followed. He doesn't care if children are involved or not, his way is THE way...

On another note, I noticed right off that Joey calls his mother "mom." That was unheard of back in the 1800's. It wasn't until much later that the word "Mom" came to be used as the mother. He should have been saying "Ma."

The story line was very good, though. I enjoyed watching how unaccepted a school was in the untamed West. I imagine that concept is pretty factual. Shane also made his place known - he was much more than "Just" a hired hand...

On a closing note, I am basing my reviews of this show solely on this show alone. I have not seen the 1955 movies, "Shane." In my mind, this show stands separate from it.
