An Okay Tribute To Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea

A normally peaceful underwater colony suddenly turns into a panic zone with residents seeing impossible visions or just going all out insane! Submarine seaQuest investigates! "Prepare yourself, Captain. You're about to meet the devil and we're all going to die in the attempt" Robert Foxworth says this and the "we're all going to die" part of his line is very much the sort of thing we heard in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-68). So this is the old meeting the new.

The devil is in fact an underwater cloud and when the cloud battles the sub in act four we get perhaps the greatest sight and sound moment in the whole seaQuest series: drama, music and wonder come together! But this is act four I am talking about here and it is a bit of a bumpy ride in the first three acts.

There is a classic Star Trek-type romance with the Captain meeting one of his old love interests from the past. Also, two seaQuest crew members make uncomfortable advances to a cute woman...do we need this in a kid's show? The hour belongs to Roy Scheider as he struggles with out-of-control temper problems of his own and his reactions to the madness around him give the story a bit of badly needed reality. The hour also belongs to the music composer as he provides a score that captures the mystery, danger and wonder of the way out story.

Many will find this hour just too over-the-top for words but to me it is a refreshing tribute to the last two seasons of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea where this kind of child-like tale was common place.
