Voyage To The Top Of SeaQuest DSV
14 January 2007 | by See all my reviews

A scientist - Charlton Heston - who was thought to be dead is living in an underwater base cut off from the world. Chuck operates on people so they can live underwater...and become fish people.

The teaser (the start) of this episode resembles the teaser for the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episode The Mermaid. Both shows begin with Ford/Captain Crane glaring at a sexy mermaid-looking girl underwater. In act one of both shows, Ford/Crane tells Bridger/Nelson that they saw a mermaid and are treated as people needing a rest. Act two of Abalon? Well, this resembles no episode of Voyage/Sea but instead goes down this path of being a 1994 version of The Brady Bunch with young Lucas wishing to go on a date. Help! Thankfully, at the end of act two Charlton Heston finally shows his face (with no gun in his hand) at the bottom of the sea and behaves like a modern day bitchy, cynical Captain Nemo. Every word from Heston really shines.

Act three more than makes up for some terrible Lucas moments in act two. In a nutshell, act three has some of the best directed/filmed comic strip scenes seen on TV for decades. Fishmen suddenly appear out of the water on a beach and take Ford away. Later, Bridger appears on the scene at the beach and comes across a sexy mermaid coming out of the water from nowhere - "Where did you come from??" - says an amazed Bridger to the girl.

After the beach we are treated to seaQuest resembling another Voyage/Sea episode - The Menfish - when Heston turns to Ford and says "We could turn you into a fish". End of act three.

Act four has some more good stuff from Heston but the Lucas sub-plot returns to upset the flow of the hour. Too bad. The final minutes deal with condom talk. Help! The most out of place mixing of plots in the history of fantasy TV, but hey, this hour still has so much in it for all viewers.
