This episode opens with a several minute long tracking shot of J.D., Turk, and Elliot entering the hospital, in which Turk makes a basketball jump shot on his way in. Donald Faison missed the shot 21 times in a row before finally making it, much to the delight of creator Bill Lawrence, who frequently played against Faison.
At one point, J.D. narrates, "A famous doctor once said, 'Show me a med student who only triples my work and I'll kiss his feet.'" This is Law #11 of the House of God, from the classic medical novel "The House of God" by Samuel Shem.
A big deal is made of the fact that JD, Elliot and Turk will now have med students, but JD's and Elliots students appear only in this episode and Turk's only appears in one more.
J.D. says he'll "call Ripley's", referring to Robert LeRoy Ripley, who founded Ripley's Believe It or Not!, a franchise that deals with events, subjects, and items that seem unbelievable.
The CEO of the corporation that owns Sacred Heart is called Whitaker Chambers, named after an American writer and Communist spy in the 1930's. (Wikipedia)
