In the book "Live From New York - an uncensored history of Saturday Night Live", Al Franken recounts that Lorne Michaels specifically requested if Paul McCartney would perform "Hey Jude" and that at first McCartney replied that he wasn't sure he remembered how it went. Franken began to sing the song to jog his memory, but McCartney told him to stop in case he also got it wrong. When he agreed to perform the song, it drew a lot of onlookers even during the rehearsal on Saturday afternoon, and most of the onlookers, including Al Franken, became teary eyed. But then Franken realized that the guard hired to make sure none of the designer clothes from the Gap Girls set were stolen was also enjoying McCartney's performance. During the live performance, all the lights on the Gap Girls set were out, and the guard was once again focusing on "Hey Jude". Franken needed a pair of jeans and didn't have time to go shopping on Sunday, so he took his chance and picked out two pear of 34-30 jeans for himself. He still wanted to pay for them, so he told Dan the prop guy what he did, explaining that he just didn't want to spend the time shopping.
