Pilot for the spin off GRADY
kevinolzak4 December 2016
"The Family Man" served as the pilot for the spin off series GRADY, the only episode without both Sanford and Son (though Redd Foxx does appear in the debut episode "Be It Ever So Humble"). Rollo is alone at the junkyard when Grady drops by, on the way back to his daughter's home in Westwood. Rollo convinces him to buy a housewarming gift for Ellie (Carol Cole, sister of Natalie Cole) and her husband Hal Marshall (Joe Morton), daughter Laurie (Rosanne Katon) and son Haywood (Haywood Nelson, later of WHAT'S HAPPENING???). Hal is a high school coach and former track star in college, while his homebody spouse calls her father 'Papi.' The painting is hardly to their liking, a nude portrait that cost Grady every cent he had, just in time for the social gathering featuring university personnel like Professor Stoneham (Howard Hesseman) and Coach Boomer Bradley (Rod Colbin). Fritzi Burr (third of ten) is present as Coach Bradley's wife Phyllis.

I 😘 ved this short lived show.I think they didn't like a descent, middle class black family.

I loved this short lived show back in the Seventies. I think it didn't make it back then because the networks didn't want a decent middle class black family on TV. All the black tv shows back in the 1970's were about poor uneducated black people with barely getting by jobs. It's almost as if the networks were trying to give the American Black Family a bad look. It's as if they didn't want the whole Country to see that there were good, decent moral, educated wealthy Black American Families in America in the 1970's. The show showed class, good taste and family life how it was in the Seventies. And it was funny!
