Storyline

Neil Burnside wants to plant a sleeper agent, Anna Wiseman, in the USSR but doesn't want to tell the Deputy Chief Matthew Peele, her actual mission. Peele isn't prepared to sanction the mission, so Burnside decides to go ahead with the mission unofficially. The real mission is to embarrass the USSR on its human rights record and Burnside decides that the best way to do so is to create maximum publicity. Written by garykmcd

THE SANDBAGGERS "My Name is Anna Wiseman" 1980

The SANDBAGGERS was a UK series set during the Cold War. The series follows a small unit of the SIS, which deals with various intelligence gathering problems. (Or eliminating said problems) The cast includes Roy Marsden, Ray Lonnen, David Glyder, Liz Bennett, Richard Vernon, Bob Sherman and Jerome Willis. The series ran for 20 episodes between 1978 and 1980.This is the 17th episode of the production run.

Roy Marsden is in charge of a covert action section of the UK Secret Service, the SIS.

In this episode, Marsden plans on sending a sleeper agent into the U.S.S.R. The mission has been in the works for 6 years and Marsden is keen to get permission from his bosses for a go. What he has not told the bosses is that the agent, Carol Gillies, has just found out she has a brain tumor and has a year at most to live. She wants her training to at least be used for something and wishes to go on with the mission.

Marsden of course knows that the higher up will not sanction the sortie if they hear about Gillies' illness. He just is not going to tell them. Gillies is working at the NATO headquarters in Brussels and the Soviets have been keeping an eye on her as a possible snatch target.

Anyways, the plan goes forward even after Marsden is told to cancel the operation. Marsden says it is too late as the bird has flown the coop. She is winging her way to Moscow.

This one is rather weak considering just how good the series has been so far. There is no real suspense or action here at all. But then again every series hits a bump in the road once in a while.

Carol Gillies would actually die from a brain tumor in 1991.
