  • In his job working as a sales associate for the Gulf American Land Corporation in Cape Coral, Florida, which includes flying prospective home buyers over the residential development, Tod reports that he saw one of his colleagues, Barben, fly over the Everglades, with the assumption that he crashed. This incident is newsworthy because Barben, as a major during WWII, was a renowned fighter pilot with twenty-four kills in the Pacific Theater to his credit. However, since, he has also been renowned as a drunk. In addition to the throngs of media, Vi Barben, the Major's estranged ex-wife of ten years, descends upon Cape Coral, she, who in private, is still obviously in love with the Major despite their marital situation. What they don't know but what Tod has told the company is that it looked like the Major was trying to commit suicide. Linc, using his paratrooper training, volunteers, along with Tod, to descend into the Everglades to look for the hopefully still alive Major, despite the natural hazards, including water moccasins, alligators and quicksand. Among the other search teams includes a man from the Major's past, he who has come both for his own benefit as well as the Major's. He is hoping their unusual shared albeit short history will be both their salvation.
