Tod and Buz, driving through rural Missouri "about four hours out of Kansas City", decide to detour and go fishing. On the way they pick up a "Jonah" who carries "slapstick" bad luck wherever he goes. Unknowingly, he also carries an engagement ring which will determine whether or not his brother will be freed.
With four days to kill before they need to be in Kansas City, Missouri, Tod and Buz have their choices narrowed down to Tod's preferred option of a dude ranch with a bunch of bored city girls in Harleyville, Missouri, or Buz's preferred option of fishing and rafting on the Ozark River in Gladstone Landing, Missouri. With a flip of the coin, Gladstone Landing it is. On their way, they run into an elderly man fishing who they will eventually learn is named Jonah Butler. Despite getting into one mishap after another with Jonah, Tod and Buz agree to give him a lift into Gladstone where his older brother, Sam Butler, lives, and whose birthday they will be celebrating tomorrow. En route, they learn from a local that the reason for the mishaps with Jonah is that he is known as a jinx. If Tod and Buz can get Jonah back to Gladstone with all of them in one piece, they will find that Sam is in trouble, all because of what his pretty but innocent granddaughter, Suzy Butler, left in the tackle box which Jonah took with him, that item which needs to be returned but which may not be where Suzy left it due to Jonah.
