  • Tod and Buz are in Austin, Texas employed as construction workers. On the job, Buz is hit on the head and nearly killed. He recovers but with a problem - he is totally blind. After initially having suicidal thoughts, Buz goes to a rural school for the blind. He slowly learns to cope with his situation and finds love as well.

  • While working at a high rise construction site, Buz sustains a head injury. Although the accident could easily have killed him, it has rendered him blind, with no medical reason for the affliction and thus no treatment. The blindness is probably only temporary, but its duration could be anywhere from days to years. Buz does not take the news well, he who cannot deal emotionally with the implications, including what it will mean for his and Tod's life adventures. His doctor sends him to an expansive school for the blind where he is to learn the basic skills required to lead a productive life as a blind person. There, many of his instructors are blind themselves, such as a young woman named Celia Monteros, who is assigned his lead trainer. He will learn that being blind adds to other complications in life he had not considered, such as in affairs of the heart.
