Alec's childhood friend, Emmett Grier, returns to Avonlea after being away in Halifax for twenty-five years. Alec talked him into buying a slightly run-down farm in the area that had sat empty for years. With Emmett is his young wife, Evelyn, and their newborn daughter, Carrie. Evelyn is a loving and devoted wife, but is unaccustomed to farm life being a city girl. Emmett admits to Alec that he is in financial straits, something that Evelyn does not know.
