Alec's childhood friend, Emmett Grier, returns to Avonlea after being away in Halifax for twenty-five years. Alec talked him into buying a slightly run-down farm in the area that had sat empty for years. With Emmett is his young wife, Evelyn, and their newborn daughter, Carrie. Evelyn is a loving and devoted wife, but is unaccustomed to farm life being a city girl. Emmett admits to Alec that he is in financial straits, something that Evelyn does not know. Shortly thereafter, Emmett is killed in a freak accident, one that could have also killed Alec. Despite being emotionally distraught being all alone in the world without finances of her own, Evelyn realizes that she has to do whatever she needs to to continue on with her and Carrie's life. Having to earn a living, she does the only thing she knows, which is to teach the piano, she once an aspiring concert pianist. Meanwhile, Alec is willing to do whatever he can to help his old friend's wife, including managing her farm ... Written by Huggo
