A little slow, but an interesting case.

£125,000 of gold bullion is stolen from The RMS Oceanic, which is on a world record breaking attempt, accused is The Purser, Mr Horrocks, who turns Detective, in a bid to find the culprit, and save his job.

The first thing I want to address, the production values, when I saw this was going to be set on board a ship, I feared the worst, but in fairness it looks pretty good, with a good atmosphere and some pretty great costumes.

The story itself, on paper I imagine this would be quite good, an intriguing read, the realisation however, for me, was a little bit flat.

Considering it's a race against the clock, it's just a little bit on the slow side, it just lacks any sort of urgency, they amble through proceedings. It's an amiable enough mystery though, intriguing enough, with an interesting conclusion.

Ronald Fraser was excellent as Horrocks I thought, lovely actor, who makes the prime suspect and Detective quite sincere, believable and certainly very likeable. Jean Marsh added a touch of quality too.

I learned what specie was as a result of watching this, seems to be a nautical term for paper money.

6/10.

Something different

I'm not sure whether this was based on a Victorian/Edwardian mystery as it seems to me to be an entirely new screenplay. It's about the theft of gold bullion on a ship and the purser who has to figure out what happened to it. The plot feels involved and Ronald Fraser is excellent as the lead.

The Looting of the Specie Room

I am not sure how faithful The Looting of the Specie Room is to the book. I think it needed a radical rewrite.

Some of the characters such as the ship's owner, Lord Altington and First Officer Clayton are downright horrible.

The ship's purser Mr Horrocks (Ronald Fraser) gets the blame when some gold bullion the RMS Oceanic is stolen from the strong room before it docks at Liverpool.

Horrocks needs to get to the bottom of the mystery before the ship reaches Southampton or he will lose his job. Inspector Trent who boarded the ship at Liverpool has to stay on as the Oceanic is also making a record attempt of the fastest crossing of the Atlantic.

Mr Horrocks is a mild mannered and affable man, but given that time is of the essence, he gets drunk, he upsets Lord Altington by slandering a crew member. It seems no one is that interested in apprehending the culprit as Altington lets all the passengers off the ship in Liverpool.

There is almost a slapdash approach to the story which could had been better presented.
