Hurray for Patricia Blair
LukeCoolHand10 December 2021
Patricia Blair is a great addition to the series. She plays the part of Lou Mallory the hotel owner starting in the 5th and final season. In my opinion she should have been added before season 5. Pat Blair later would be a regular on the series Daniel Boone with Fess Parker. She is a looker and the crew of The Rifleman knew they had a real gem because in those first episodes with her whenever they showed her they really zoomed in the camera and kept it on her face a few seconds. I have only seen the first few episodes with her and don't know if she and Lucas developed a love interest later. I'll get back and edit my post some when I find that out. Anyway she is a welcome addition to the cast and a good counter point to Lucas, Mark, and Micah.

I am saddened that Patricia Blair may not have been a great person in real life though because she was responsible for getting Veronica Cartwright off Daniel Boone with Fess Parker because she thought Miss Cartwright made her look aged. She did not look aged and threatening to quit a show because of a teenager seems ridiculous.

Lou takes her place in North Fork.

It seems that the series has a unique way of introducing women into the series. When Milly was first seen in the series, she had upset most of the townsfolk by using a bill collector. In this episode, we are introduced to Lou Mallory and sure enough she has some of the people in a uproar about her actions.

Lou comes into town and starts buying some local land from some of the poor farmers. And since Milly has left North Fork, she buys the General Store plus the hotel to settle down in the town. But what the townsfolk does not know - is that the railroad is planning to lay tracks into North Fork which will cause the town to boom. Now people are upset that she had the information and did not reveal it to the land owners.

One rural family, The Jackman's, are particularly upset at Lou. The Jackman's are not the brightest people and want to seek revenge on the woman who they think cheated them out of their land. With their limited education the best revenge is to make her one of the family. And Lou is not too happy about being a Jackman.

Even though this is not the first time we have seen the Jackman family, it is the first time that they were actually humorous. The introduction plot was really not that interesting but the comical script made the show better. Not a gem but one worthy of a watch.
