THE RIFLEMAN – Death Trap – 1962
Chuck Connors headlines this 1958 to 1963 western series that ran for 168 episodes. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle. This of course ends up getting him in no end of trouble. This is episode 109.
Chuck Connors and son, Johnny Crawford, find a badly wounded man on the outskirts of North Fork. They load him on the buckboard and rush him to the Doc's office. It turns out that the doctor and the North Fork Sheriff, Paul Fix, are out of town at a barn-raising.
Connors sends word out to Fix and the doc to return as soon as possible. It will be at least 6 hours before that can happen. Connors tries to do what he can to patch the hole and stop the bleeding. He is soon joined by a man, Phil Carey and his young daughter, Gigi Perreau. Carey is a former gunman Connors knew from 10 years before. The two had drawn on each other back in the day with Carey biting lead. He now claims that he is a doctor and can save the man.
Connors does not believe it for a moment, but allows Carey to look at the wound. Carey sends his daughter off to fetch his medical bag and goes to work. He expertly pulls the bullet and cleans and bandages the wound. Connors and Carey send off their kids while they talk of past events.
It seems that after their scrap of a decade ago, Carey had seen the light. When his wife died, Carey and his daughter had moved out east. He enrolled in medical school and became a doctor. He has now come back west to help make amends for his former criminal life.
Of course trouble now rears its head. Four men drinking at the saloon hear about the wounded man. It turns out that these are the men who had shot, and left for dead, the man Connors found.
They decide to finish the job and go for the wounded man. This draws a quick response by Connors and the still handy with a gun, Carey. Lead flies with 3 of the 4 men biting the dirt. The survivor, James Drury, gets a sound beating and is tossed in jail. Carey and Connors shake hands and the past is forgotten.
Series producer, Arnold Laven, handles the directing chores on this episode. James Drury would soon become a television staple with a 9 year run as the lead in, THE VIRGINIAN. (1962-1971)
