Richard Diamond is hired by Alec Bruce, the editor of the Bridgeburg Gazette, to protect their party candidate, Allison Garvey, from murder or abduction by Michaud's Syndicate. Diamond is threatened at knife-point by Danny (one of Michaud's men) in his hotel room and told to lay off the case. Diamond takes his advice, tells Danny "he knows when to quit" since he is aware that Danny murdered the previous detective who was on the case. Diamond returns to the editor's office to inform them he is quitting the case since he believes there is an informer at the Gazette and he doesn't feel he has the support of Allison Garvey who he was hired to protect. Now that Diamond has everyone believing he is off the case, he continues to follow Allison. Allison has now been abducted and Diamond soon discovers that everything is not what it appears to be.
