Because of advice from his doctor to do so, Jack goes on a weight loss journey. He ends up losing thirty pounds, ten pounds more than was the target. After stating the news to Rhoda, Rhoda in turn mentions to him that she did notice, but didn't notice how much he actually did lose since Jack is still hiding his new body behind his old clothes and old style. It isn't until Jack looks at himself critically in a mirror that he realizes that he likes the way he looks and decides to give himself a new outward image to match, buying sleeker and more youthful clothes and dying his hair black. With this new style comes a new bravado - of sorts - as he wants to start dating again, but is still nervous to approach women. When she does show interest, Jack decides to ask a customer, a statuesque and beautiful woman named Arlene Paxton, out on a date, she who would generally be out of his league.
