Ex-soldier Roy Gates ( Ian Hendry ) has spent years in a German jail for terrorism offences. Simon owes him a debt as he saved his life whilst on a secret mission in Aden. Freed on parole, Gates returns to London, teams up with old friend Diskette ( Tony Vogel ), and plots revenge on the man who put him behind bars - Cleaver ( Gerald Flood ).

Gates' estranged wife Sandy ( Annette Andre ) has told their son Michael that he is dead. Gates visits Michael at his private school and puts that right.

As Cleaver is now an arms dealer with a Government contract, he is a very important target indeed. Templar must find Gates before it is too late...

Based on a story by Roger Parkes ( though scripted by John Kruse ), this drew criticism at the time as I recall for the scene where Gates lures his son to a private spot to tell him he is his father. It was feared paedophiles, noting the ease with which the boy was led away, might imitate the idea. The episode was notably absent from repeats ( at least it was in my part of the world ). Which is a pity as it is really rather good, with a strong guest performance from Ian Hendry. The tough-guy actor, ravaged by years of alcoholism, was nearing the end of his life yet still managed to convincingly portray the character of 'Gates'. Gerald Flood's 'Cleaver', is the story's true villain, and when Templar fails to save him at the end it is impossible to feel sympathy.

The lovely Annette Andre looks the same here as when she played 'Jeannie' a decade earlier in 'Randall & Hopkirk ( Deceased )'. Norman Eshley pops up again as Inspector George Caulfield, last seen in 'The Nightmare Man'. Tony Vogel went on to play 'Dick Barton Special Agent' in the I.T.V. series of that name.

You do not need to be a clairvoyant to predict the outcome but it works nonetheless.

Good to see a British-based 'Saint' again. Come to think of it, they were the best ones.

Director Roy Ward Baker was another veteran of the Moore series.
