Crooked property developer Ray Dennis ( John Woodvine ) murders his business partner Charlie Stewart ( Sam Kydd ) after a heated argument. Stewart's daughter Jenny ( Fiona Curzon ) does not accept the Coroner's verdict of 'accidental death', and neither does The Saint.

To bring Dennis to book, the Saint - along with a few friends - launches an elaborate scam. Posing as politician Sir Malcolm Street, Simon inveigles his way into a poker game at which Dennis is present, and then pretends to lose heavily. Thinking he has a member of H.M.G. in the palm of his hand, Dennis blackmails 'Sir Malcolm' into revealing details of a bid by American millionaire Buzz Wepner ( Paul Maxwell ) to buy London's Tower Bridge. Dennis senses a golden opportunity to make a lot of money...

Written by Leon Griffiths, the creator of 'Minder', this is a fun episode, strengthened by a good cast including Alfie Bass ( as seedy boxing manager 'Sammy' ), Terry Duggan ( 'Nobby' from 'On The Buses' ), Stanley Meadows, Jacki Piper ( from 'Carry On Up The Jungle' ), Alan Browning ( of 'Coronation Street'. This was his final television appearance as he died a year later ), and wrestler Jackie Pallo.

John Woodwine is one of the unsung heroes of British television and films, an actor able to move effortlessly from hero to villain roles and back again. Some may remember him as 'Bloody Delilah' in the first season of Jack Rosenthal's 'The Dustbinmen'. He also played 'Kingdom' in L.W.T.'s police drama 'New Scotland Yard'. Sexy Fiona Curzon was tipped for stardom after her work on Granada's 'The X Y Y Man', but instead wound up as a hostess on Ted Rogers' '3-2-1'.

The plot is straight out of the B.B.C.'s 'Hustle' - skilled con-artists out to bring down a powerful crook - with good London location work and cheeky humour. It stands in stark contrast to the glossy but empty Italian-based episodes.

A couple of flaws - Ashton's giving away the Saint's identity does spoil the story. I had been looking forward to seeing Dennis' look of horror on realising he had been conned. Also the stuntman doubling for Ogilvy in the climax is noticeable.

Like I said, a fun episode, and its a pity that Griffiths did not make further contributions to the show.
