"Whatever happens to her will happen to you!"

Simon Templar ( Ian Ogilvy ) is mountain climbing in Italy when Algernon ( Richard Wyler ) tries to kill him. Templar is about to knock several bells out of him when he reveals he is from M16. He has just tested Templar for a job they wish him to carry out.

Selma Morell ( Judy Geeson ), a British agent, has been captured by the Albanian secret police and is being held at a mountain fortress for interrogation. With the help of other agents, Templar breaks in, only to be told by her that she has defected, and has no desire to leave...

Scripted by Moris Fahri ( author of the excellent 'Man In A Suitcase' episode 'The Whisper' as well as a contributor to 'Strange Report' ), this standard spy drama made for a less-than impressive debut for Ogilvy's 'Saint'. Though a better actor than Moore, he comes over as wooden ( though he grew into the role over time ). Giving him a James Bond-like sense of humour ( "You're falling down on the job boys!", he quips as he knocks over a pair of guards ) did not work. Judy Geeson is wasted as 'Selma'.

Being a co-production with Italy's RAI television, several episodes had to be made there. The locations looked great but the charm of the Elstree-based shows was lost. Jeremy Summers, the director, had worked on the Moore series.

Producer Anthony Spinner was reportedly not keen on screen violence, meaning the fights have a comic book-look to them. In the era of 'Starsky & Hutch' and 'The Sweeney' this was not a good idea.

Critics panned 'Return'. Margaret Forwood of 'The Sun' wrote: "What a disappointment the first episode of this much-publicised new series turned out to be.". She went on to claim that the plot was as thinly-drawn as the Saint's matchstick man trademark. She was right, of course. But over time the show improved.
