Storyline

Reno's comatose fiancée Val is finally pronounced dead and taken off of life support. Lieutenant Dutch Dixon receives this information before anybody else does, and keeps it from leaking into the media. Dixon and his corrupt police force use this as an opportunity to set a trap to bait Reno out into the open, creating a false media story that Val has regained consciousness. Although reluctant and suspicious as first, Reno feels he has no choice but to check out the story, and ends up getting arrested, falling right into their trap. Dixon goes as far as to plan an elaborate jail house execution of Reno, but he is able to thwart this scheme with the help of some friends. Written by Dark Saibot

Storyline-advancing episode
30 December 2008 | by See all my reviews

Valerie, the woman Reno Raines was engaged to be married to but got shot during an attempt on his life in the "Renegade" series pilot and had been in a coma ever since, dies. The crooked Lt. Dixon (played by the series' creator, Stephen J. Cannell) orders a fake TV report of her "reviving", and although Reno suspects that it might be a trap, he goes to see her anyway. Of course it IS a trap, and Reno gets arrested and thrown to jail. Now he must find a way not only to escape, but also to deal with Dixon and an entire underground squad of dirty (figuratively and literally) cops. "Val's song" is interesting for being the first episode since the pilot that advances the storyline of the series so much (instead of just being a random "bounty hunter" adventure), and I have to admit that Cannell is not a bad actor at all.
