Louvre museum director Dr. Francois Jaebert's gray researcher Frederick Harris calls a marker on Sydney to help, with Nigel, track down his trail from a manuscript to the mythical, ruby-studded golden scepter in the secret tomb of the Germanic conqueror Gunther the Brave (circa 400 AD). The clues and matching crystal and stone tablet enable them to locate it in Kleine Burgh and get it past the deadly booby-traps. However they were spied upon by ruthless agents, and by the time they realize being used by Frederick he has already sold it to Turkish collector Aziz Habasi, whose diplomatic status complicates retrieving it to MacGyver level.
