"The Promise" opens with Johnny Yuma on an errand to find Laurie Buford (Gigi Perreau, previously seen in "Don Gringo"), to gift her the watch belonging to her late father, who had left his wife behind to search for gold in California. Tracking her down at the home of burly Hobie Kincaid (Peter Whitney), Yuma learns that she is to wed his nephew Billy Joe (Richard Hartunian, previously seen in "The Scavengers"), as reparation for taking her mother in before she was born. Laurie's true love is Frank Hawkins (John Gentry), whose father (Victor Izay, later seen in "The Pit") informs Johnny that the girl's mother was driven to an early grave by the slave driving Hobie, who doesn't take kindly to the rebel keeping his promise to the girl's father, not just the family watch, but also her happiness. Things really begin to heat up after Yuma kills Billy Joe in self defense, only to have the evil Hobie try to have him strung up for cold blooded murder. Series veteran George Becwar (sixth of seven) has a good role as a conscientious reverend.
