- When the eccentric millionaire Charles Braling takes all his savings to his manor and builds a glass coffin, his greedy brother Richard Braling mocks him. Charles dies and in the will, Richard may have the mansion and all his savings if he finds where it is hidden. Richard finds the money in the coffin, but it's not as easy as it first seemed.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Robotic expert Charles Braling lives at his home in the countryside, surrounding himself with the robots that he has made. His solicitor, St. John Court, comes to visit and brings all of Charles' money with him. He advises against Charles keeping it in the house but Charles insists that there's no danger.
Richard Braling, Charles' brother, visits and Charles figures he's there to ask for money again. Richard asks why Court was there and wonders what Charles is doing. Charles tells his brother that he's dying and that he's trying to finish his final invention: his own coffin. Richard points out that it's too large to be a real coffin, and includes a glass window and a tape player. Charles just smiles and says it's a very special coffin. When Richard offers to stay a while, Charles tells him to get out and Richard reminds him that a woman named Angela left Charles for the younger Richard. Charles snaps and reminds his brother that he sold Charles his share of the house to pay off his debts. Richard insists on staying so he can find out what Charles is doing.
Richard walks around the house and tries to figure out what Charles is up to. His brother tape records message and paces off the number of steps from his workshop to the floor and then out to the garden. Charles finally invites Richard back up to his workshop and tells him that he's near death. He asks for Richard's help setting up the coffin and says that he wants to forgive him. Richard continues to goad Charles, reminding him that he has no real friends. Charles orders him out and then smiles as he considers his coffin. Richard hears a thump and goes back to discover that Charles is dead.
Richard calls the undertaker and has Charles taken away. He hides the coffin, figuring he can sell it for parts. When the mortuary calls, Richard tells them to pick out the cheapest coffin and to skip any funeral service.
Later, Court visits the house and tells Richard about Charles' last will and testament. In it, Charles leaves the house to Richard. However, the solicitor warns that the taxes on the house will take up any value. However, he explains that Charles had all of his finances liquidated and the money brought to the house. Court continues and explains that Charles left his brother the plans for the coffin for whatever money he can get from them. Also, everything within the house belongs to Richard as well, including the 750,000 pounds in money and another 550,000 in jewelry that belonged to Angela. The will ends with Charles saying that he says he has no hard feelings toward Richard and wishes him a long life and a "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum."
Once Court goes, Richard searches the house to find the stolen loot. He figures that Charles' last words refer to a dead man's chest and he goes to the coffin. He searches it and realizes the extra space holds the hidden money. Richard notices a sign in the coffin saying that it will automatically activate once the body is placed inside. Curious, Richard gets inside and the tape player starts up. Charles has left a pre-recorded message giving a funeral service for the bereaved. However, he starts insulting the dead man and Richard realizes the message is speaking to him. The coffin lid closes on its own and Richard sees his own name on the lid. Charles tells him that he knew his brother couldn't resist getting in the coffin, and built the entire thing for him.
The automated coffin starts up on its own and moves down the stairs. Automated candles go off and a wreath drops on the coffin. As Richard tries to get out, the coffin trundles outside into the garden and starts burying itself. When Richard tries to break his way out, a robot arm injects him with a sedative and Richard looks up in horror as the dirt fills in over the top of the coffin. One of Charles' robots arrive and says "Goodbye, Richard" as rain comes down on Richard's grave.
