An outlaw who Wishbone wounded while getting supplies in town staggers into camp, falls over and dies carrying a strongbox with $50.000.00 in Yankee greenbacks. It's the stolen loot from a stagecoach robbery.
Eric Fleming makes a decision to take the money on to the next town, but Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. shows up claiming to be a sheriff, but he's unmasked quickly by Paul Brinegar who says he's one of the outlaws. He gets captured and held by the drovers, but after that it's a war of attrition as the outlaws want both Zimbalist and the money.
These outlaws are a former Confederate unit that never surrendered. Let's just say a cold dose reality is in store for them.
Clint Eastwood served with Zimbalist in the war and the two have some intense scenes. But the responsibility is as it always is on Eric Fleming. Fleming shows why he's the leader.
