Wishbone, the cook, is buying supplies for the cattle drive that is about to begin in a few days. A young boy steals a sack of food, and Wishbone follows him home, where he discovers the boy's injured mother, Mrs. Harmon (Barbara Barrie), who had been beaten and abused by now-missing drunken husband. Kindly Wishbone takes it upon himself to be a substitute father, caring for Mrs. Harmon while she heals, feeding the boys, buying presents and even cleaning the house. He seems to slowly develop an unstated romantic interest in the woman. He tells ramrod Rowdy that he is quitting the cattle drive! When Paul, the drunken husband, returns, he learns about Wishbone, looks for him and starts beating him. The woman has no choice but to shoot Paul. Being protective of Mrs. Harmon, Wishbone says he did the shooting, and he offers to bribe the only witness to back-up Wishbone's version. Even though he is facing jail time if convicted, to get money for the bribe, Wishbone agrees to re-join for cattle drive in return for some advance pay. Meanwhile, the husband recovers from the gun shot wound and implores his wife to take him back. Rowdy is in charge of starting a new drive while Favor is gone. Wishbone is feeling depressed about his life until he spots a boy steal food and finds an injured woman and three boys barely getting by. Her husband is a drunk who beat her severely. Wishbone uses the money for supplies provided by Rowdy to buy them food, toys, and clothes. He decides to stay in town finding a job as cook at the hotel. When confronted about the missing money, he promises to pay Rowdy back. The husband returns drunk to find his family with the new items so he goes after Wishbone. He gives Wishbone a severe beating but his wife tells him to stop or she will shoot him. When he ignores her threat, she shoots. Wishbone rushes her out telling her to say nothing while forcing the only witness to state Wishbone did it in self defense. Wishbone is arrested but the man does not dies and refuses to press charges. Wishbone is forced to sign a contract to cook for Rowdy to get the money to pay off the lone witness to help him get out of town. When it is clear the wife plans to stay with her husband, Wishbone is ready to leave and back to old grumpy self.
Wishbone decides to quit the drives when he finds he is needed to help a woman and her kids. However, her drunk husband is not happy about Wishbone's help tries to kill Wishbone. When the wife shoots him, Wishbone decides to take the blame.
Wishbone quits the cattle drive because he falls in love with a family of three boys and an abused wife. The wife shoots her drunken husband when he starts beating Wishbone, who takes responsibility for the shooting to protect her.
