Incident Before Black Pass (19 May 1961)

Rowdy and Pete are taken hostage by Kiowas who want safe passage to Black Pass from the Army for their Chief. A scared fortune telling drover causes problems when tells on Favor to the Army and a rancher wanting revenge for his wife.

Storyline

Rowdy and Pete are captured by Kiowas. An Army patrol tells Favor they are looking for Chief White Eyes, partly white, who was released to die with his people but escaped. Favor tells them he is missing two men. That night Gypsy, a fortune teller, says the men are dead and predicts his own death. White Eyes sends two men to Favor's camp to request a meeting but Gypsy mortally wounds one of them. White Eyes wants to leave a bequest of peace by heading to his old home to die as a white man so the settlers will not blame the Kiowas for his past warfare deeds. He asks Favor to help him reach Black Pass by hiding him from the Army in return for his men. Favor agrees but the scared Gypsy leaves only to run into Cal Stone who is hunting White Eyes for scarring his wife. Cal is forced to have the Army search Favor's camp but his wife refuses to identify White Eyes who is dressed as a drover. Later, she tells Cal it was White Eyes who saved her from a burning house after her father massacred a...

Leonard Nimoy and Robert Armstrong

"Incident Before Black Pass" centers on the dying Kiowa chief White Eyes (Zachary Scott), so named because he is half caucasian, who seeks refuge among Gil Favor's cattle drovers by holding hostage both Rowdy (Clint Eastwood) and Pete (Sheb Wooley). Lt. Meadows (Robert Sampson) isn't the only one tracking White Eyes, for an aging rancher (Robert Armstrong) desires revenge on behalf of his scarred wife (Cathy Downs). Best of all is 30 year old Leonard Nimoy, who demonstrates his versatility as Anko, whose lack of wisdom leads him to forego peace by leading his tribe against the white men. It's a fine showcase for Nimoy, who that year did an episode of GUNSMOKE ("A Man a Day"), three years before beginning his TREK as Mr. Spock. The 71 year old Robert Armstrong, best remembered for 1933's "King Kong," would retire by 1965.
