Storyline

A pleasant man moves to a small town. He gives himself out as being a famous geologist, an expert in locating oil-deposits by signs in the surface of the landscape. Soon he is introduced into the community of the local businessmen. He reveals to them that he has found signs of an oil-deposit just outside the town. He offers them shares in the oil-field on very good conditions, but as soon as the money is paid and the contracts are signed, he prepares to leave the town immediately. Pretty good.

Jackson Halliday plays a guy who claims to be Walter Cartright-- successful geologist who works in the petroleum industry. This is because there really is a Walter Cartright and he really is good at his job. But, this guy isn't a geologist--just a con man who has come to take advantage of some guys' greed.

When 'Cartright' comes to this small town, he doesn't use hard-sell techniques to get folks to give him their money. Instead, he acts like a nice guy and slowly insinuates himself into local society. Then, he throws out some bait...telling his new friends that he has a deal brewing where he's bound to make a rich oil strike. Promising them to refund their money if the well doesn't pay off, the con man manages to get $100,000 out of the folks in this small town before the law springs into action.

This is not the most exciting episode of "Racket Squad" I've seen. Instead, it's more a warning to the public to be on guard for this sort of racket. As such, it is successful and entertaining.
