Behind Bars For Rab
30 November 2016 | by (Wallyford, East Lothian, Scotland) – See all my reviews

A pretty disappointing end to the otherwise brilliant third series of 'Rab C. Nesbitt', which by this point had become Scotland's most popular comedy show.

The episode starts with a prisoner attempting to hang himself from the light fitting in his cell until a drunk Rab has been thrown into his cell. Rab tries striking up a conversation with the man however he remains despondent and unresponsive. To make matters worse for Rab, the officer guarding the cell has become so highly strung by his job he becomes almost murderous. And so begins a sleepless night for all concerned.

'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' star Timothy Spall plays the cell mate though truth to tell he is wasted in the role. Gilbert Martin plays the angry prison guard. Having the entire episode tied to one location did not really work in my opinion as it offered no plot development. It also suffered from the absence of Mary, Jamesie, Gash and Burney et al.

Funniest moment- awaiting a kicking from an army of officers, Rab surveys the cell for a weapon to defend himself with. Finding a chamber pot, he picks it up and says - ''just the thing. One shite in this will keep an army away!''.
