Quincy visits a private club called the Magic Castle, seeking more information on the murder. The Magic Castle is a real club, built in 1909, which bills itself as "the most unusual private club in the world." The hidden entrance and Irma with her piano are really as depicted in the episode, as is the formal dress code. Magicians perform within the nightclub every weekend.
The episode starts at the Tav Celebrity Theater. For years, this was home to ABC Studios, and later to the Merv Griffin Show. Gutted by fire in the 1990s, only its facade still stands, now converted to loft apartments.
This episode marked the fourth season of Quincy for an unusual occurrence. Jo Ann Pflug here plays Quincy's girlfriend Maggie; she had played another girlfriend named Marsha in the earlier, "A Small Circle of Friends". What made this unusual is that in addition to Pflug, Sharon Acker had also played two different girlfriends during this fourth season.
