Speed Trap begins at Danny's where Quincy (Jack Klugman) and friends are watching a car race on television when one of the drivers favored to win, Kevin Bannon, suddenly loses control and crashes. Kevin does not survive the accident and later Quincy conducts the autopsy at the coroner lab finding amphetamines in his system. Kevin's chief mechanic (Simon Oakland) cries foul at the findings and maintains that Kevin would have never taken any type of drugs due to his strict health regimen. Quincy begins to believe this assertion when he discovers that Kevin had hypoglycemia and with this condition the amphetamines would have caused him to lose consciousness shortly after taking them making it a possible murder.
This second episode of Season 4 is an OK one where there is a murder mystery featured but the plot is rather predictable. Right from the opening scenes where Quincy is watching the race and commenting on a particular driver you know that driver is going to crash and there will be an investigation into whether someone caused it. This coupled along with the stock footage of racing scenes used just make for an overall unremarkable episode in my opinion and certainly not one of the standouts of Season 4.
