THE PROFESSIONALS – "Close Quarters"- 1978

Episode seven of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

CI-5 Agent Lewis Collins is out on medical leave because of a hand injury. So he takes his girl, the stunning Gabrielle Drake, out for a relaxing cruise down a river. The couple row by a man standing on the bank. Collins recognizes the man, Clive Arrindell, from some wanted photos at CI-5 headquarters. Arrindell is a member of a German terrorist group.

Collins rows up the river a bit and lands the boat. He doubles back by land and jumps the terrorist. Since CI-5 men are always on call, they are always armed. He cuffs the swine and drags him back to the boat. Collins tells Drake there will be a slight delay in their day out. Collins needs to drop Arrindell at the nearest Police station.

That idea turns out not to be that simple. Three other members of the terrorist gang, Madleina Nedeva, David Bradley and Barney James choose that moment to arrive by motorboat. Arrindell starts shouting and the three terrorists make a beeline for Collins and company. Collins manages to speed their rowboat under some overhanging trees and land the craft.

Collins stuffs a rag in the captured man's yap and rushes Drake and Arrindell along a riverside pathway. They need to get to the nearby village where Collin's car is parked. The villains have the same idea and race to the same car park. Having a speedboat of course gives them the advantage.

When Collins and company appear, Miss Nedeva and her boys pull several sub machine guns out from under their jackets. Shots are exchanged but Collins manages to load his bunch in a car and roar off. The terrorist swine likewise grab an auto and give chase.

Collins pulls off at a large house and shoves everyone in. The owner, Alan Surtees is not amused with the entrance. He quickly changes his mind when Collins flashes his weapon and demands the phone. He gets on the blower and calls headquarters. CI-5 boss, Gordon Jackson is soon on the horn and Collins explains what is happening. The phone lines though are cut before Collins can give Jackson an exact location. The terrorists have the house surrounded and demand Collins release their leader. Collins is of course somewhat reluctant to do this. He knows the nasty types will just kill them all if he complies.

More shots are exchanged with Surtees and one of the terrorists being killed. Collins is down to his last few rounds. What to do? Ci-5 in the meantime is flooding the general area to try and find Collins and company.

The villains know they will soon run out of time and decide to storm the house. Doors are kicked and Collins, Drake and his prisoner flee to the roof. Collins sees a CI-5 car passing on the main road. He uses one of his last rounds to try and signal the auto. The car, with Jackson and Agent Martin Shaw inside, take the "hint". They race up to the house in the old "nick of time" bit. The two attacking terrorists are shot dead.

This is another, fast, violent, and exciting episode of a great UK series.
