The girl next door
jotix10017 July 2006
"Private Screenings", presented by TCM, recently, presented this interview with one of the most enduring, charming and generous actresses that ever graced the movies, June Allyson. The host, Robert Osborne, is charming in his impeccable style in his conversation he had with Ms. Allyson.

June Allyson was always that perky face in the films which she appeared. Her appearance in any movie guaranteed an honest performance from a woman who had no mean bones in her body. Her hard work and winning personality served her well during those years she spent at MGM going from one production to another.

As she explained, the studio system protected them from everything and everybody. There were people in the publicity department that knew what to expose the stars under contract and in turn, the stars would not do anything that went against what the studio expected of them. That era, sadly to say, ended abruptly for many of the stars when Louis B. Mayer left and Dore Schary came to replace him.

It was poignant to have seen the program right after Ms. Allyson's death last week. In a way, thanks to the movies, Ms. Allyson will live forever. When we watch her in pictures we shall always remember that smiling face of a woman that embodied the girl-next-door type for what she was so celebrated in the movies.
