Quotes

  • [Bobbie has just announced news of her pregnancy to the other women, all happy for her... except one]

Phyllis Hunt : I don't know what yous are all excited about; they'll take it off her when as soon as it's two.

Judy Bryant : Would you shut up, Phyll, just shut up!

Phyllis Hunt : I'm doin' her a favour. She might as well get rid of it right now.

Bobbie Mitchell : It's alright; just jealous. Just because she was too mental to look after her own kids she doesn't want me to have one. Well get this Hunt; I'm getting out of here in a couple of months and I'm not coming back. You're right, I didn't think I could have kids, but now I've got one and no mongrel is gonna take it away from me. No-one.

  • Cass Parker : Come on Bobbie, drink your milk. I'll ask Mrs Reynolds to double it for you; we don't want the baby having soft bones.

Bobbie Mitchell : Cass, I'm not having a bloody calf. Lay off will ya. I feel sick.

Cass Parker : It's for your own good.

Judy Bryant : [laughs]  You're gonna make a terrific father, Cass.

Phyllis Hunt : [from the next table, having overheard]  Might as well. She don't know who the real father is.

  • Judy Bryant : How are you coping with Papa Cass?

Bobbie Mitchell : Had it Jude. She wont let me do anything.

Judy Bryant : It's just her way of making up.

Bobbie Mitchell : Yeah, I know. You haven't got a fag have you?

  • Myra Desmond : Was Secker badly hurt?

Colleen Powell : No, he wasn't. And the police were quite anxious to take him alive; apparently he's got quite a few questions to answer.

Judy Bryant : Poor Hanna. You know, she's lucky she didn't suffocate in that dryer.

Pixie Mason : I was so frightened for her. I mean, that would be an awful way to die.

Judy Bryant : There aren't many pleasant ways to die, Pixie.

Pixie Mason : No, but I mean in a laundry dryer, that'd be an especially awful way to die.

Cass Parker : Hanna gonna be alright now, Mrs Powell?

Colleen Powell : She's upset but at least she knows the real danger is over. Sister Kelly has given her a sedative before she meets her *real* relations.

Bobbie Mitchell : I hope everything goers alright. She's had it rough, poor bugger.

Cass Parker : And how about you Bobbie, you okay?

    Bobbie Mitchell : I wasn't scared for a minute.

[the women laugh, not taking her seriously]

Pixie Mason : I was petrified!

Colleen Powell : Okay, well it's over now. And here's the good news; you don't have to finish your shift. Mrs Reynolds thinks you've had enough excitement for one day.

    Pixie Mason : Oh terrific!

Judy Bryant : Well, you've had a pretty exciting last day, too, haven't you?

Colleen Powell : Yeah, one I wont forget in a hurry.

Pixie Mason : Oh you're so brave tackling that awful man like that.

Cass Parker : Yeah, you had him going there for a minute.

Colleen Powell : Well I think you all kept your cool remarkably well. But perhaps after this little run in I wont miss Wentworth too much after all.

Pixie Mason : Oh but we'll miss you, wont we?

[the women affirm this with sadness]

Judy Bryant : We sure will.

    Colleen Powell : Thanks Pixie.

    [she goes to leave]

Colleen Powell : Okay ladies, bye. Good luck and uh...

    [turns to face them]

Colleen Powell : ... try to keep out of trouble.

Judy Bryant : Mrs Powell... send us a postcard will you?

Pixie Mason : Oh yes. Like that lovely one you sent to me. Well you didn't send it, Ralph did... oh but I'm sure you would have sent it to me aswell... oh but you know what I mean?

Colleen Powell : Yes... Pixie. Look... for once I think I really do.

Pixie Mason : Oh Mrs Powell!

[Pixie goes to her and kisses her on the cheek]

Pixie Mason : Good bye. Good luck. And thanks for everything.

Myra Desmond : Yeah. That goes for all of us.

Judy Bryant : Yeah. It sure does.

Colleen Powell : [taken aback]  Thanks. Bye.

[Colleen leaves the laundry and the women for the last time]

  • Pixie Mason : I can't believe it really happened. I mean we all could've been killed.

Myra Desmond : Yes, I must admit I was saying my prayers when he took off after Hanna.

Judy Bryant : Thank God for Po-Face and Cass, eh? If they hadn't distracted him Hanna would have been a goner.

Cass Parker : [to Bobbie]  Well, you had your best mate don't forget. Had to do somethin'.

Bobbie Mitchell : [on Colleen]  Didn't think she'd go that far to try and save one of us.

Pixie Mason : Oh she was really wonderful. I mean if it had been Mrs Morris I would've understood, but I didn't expect that sort of thing from Mrs Powell.

Judy Bryant : It's funny, isn't it? She's not like Meg Morris but she's not the Freak either. It's a pity she's going.

  • Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson : [interrogating the women on the Camilla Wells article]  You Mitchell, you're a real little sneak, aren't you? After all I did spoil a thriving career in Sydney.

[Cass rubs Bobbie's shoulder. Joan knocks her arm off]

Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson : Oh, c'mon now Parker, we don't stand for that sort of thing around here, do we Bryant? After all Parker... you've got that oaf from the country, haven't you? You wouldn't be interested in a little street tart carrying a bundle from a one night stand, now would you?

Myra Desmond : You must be really worried. I mean with your record. I can't see why a little paragraph in the press is going to worry the Department.

Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson : I'm not worried Desmond. I just wanna fond out who my friends are. And when I find out who did me that little... favour... I'll say thank you... in my own... special way. That is a promise.

[Joan slowly walks out of the rec room]

Judy Bryant : God, who needs Mr Secker when we've got our own resident terrorist?

Pixie Mason : She'll forget about it if she gets the job, won't she?

Myra Desmond : [shaking her head]  Not her.

  • [last lines]

Judy Bryant : Myra, you have got to stop torturing yourself about her, that's not going to help Kay.

Myra Desmond : Oh and what is, Jude? Tell me that. Oh God, what a waste my life has been. Some mother I am, my daughter needs me and she's on her own.

Judy Bryant : Now that's not true, you've been a great mother to Kay. And what about all the other women you helped at the PRG and the women in here? You got them what they wanted. you got them money. You got them privileges. You've given them a kind of thope that they've never had for a long time. You haven't wasted your life; you did it out there and you're not in here.

Myra Desmond : I can't help Kay in here, Jude. And by God I've gotta help her.

    [pause]

Myra Desmond : I've gotta escape and find Kay. You with me or not?
