***SPOILERS*** Debut episode of the 1959 "Philip Marlowe" series with Philip Carey in the leading role as he tries to solve a murder case that almost ends up getting himself murdered. This has to do with the uncertain of himself as well as afraid of his own shadow David Jordan, James Griffith, who's being blackmailed by this bimbo Donna Raymond, Barbara Bain, that he been secretly having an affair with. It's Donna who's threatening to tell Jordan's wife Luceille, Virginia Gregg, about her cheating husband's affair if he doesn't pay her off. With Marlowe on the case he's told by Virginia's millionaire father Paul Howard, Addison Richards, to give Donna 10 G's to get her out of both her daughter and her gold digging husbands, whom he has absolutely no use for, life.
As you would expect Marlowe runs into trouble when he's whacked by this hood Frank Rossi, Marc Towers,as he tries to deliver the pay off money to Donna who's later found shot, when Marlowe regains conciseness, dead in her hotel room. Getting chewed out by chief homicide detective Let. Manny Harris, William Schallert, for screwing things up Marlowe recruits his good friend and tipster, on this case as well as the horses, hotel house detective the overweight Frank Overstreet, Rhys Williams, to help him find Donna's killer as well as keep him from having his license as a private eye or dick from being suspended.
****SPOILERS**** Checking out a number of leads it soon becomes obvious to Marlowe who murdered Donna and why: for the $10,000.00 payoff money. It take a while for Marlowe to get his job done in that Donna's killer is partially his own shadow and as close to him as a slice of bacon is to a scrambled egg. The tall and handsome Philip Carey is no beat up and weather worn looking Humprey Bogart or Robert Mitchum, who both played Philip Marlowe in the movie, but is believable enough in the role that makes it work for him.
