PETER GUNN – Vendetta – 1959
This is episode 36 from the 1958 to 61 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Hope Emerson as the owner of, MOTHER'S jazz club. Lola Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.
MOTHER'S jazz club has just closed for the night. Hope Emerson, bartender Byron Kane, ivory pounder Bill Chadney and club singer, Lola Albright are relaxing with a drink. Somebody starts pounding on the club door. Byron opens the door to tell the people the club has closed. Two men, Dick Crockett and Herb Armstrong burst in with drawn pistols. Crockett aims right at Albright and fires. Down in a heap she goes. Crockett then says, "Tell Gunn that his three years are up!" The two gunmen then turn and leave. An ambulance is quickly summoned and Albright rushed to the emergency room.
Later that evening, Stevens is at her side asking about the incident. Stevens has no idea what the three year crack meant, or who the gunmen were. He will of course not stop till he finds out and evens the score. Also in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound is Police Lt Herschel Bernardi. Stevens pays Bernardi a visit to see if he has any ideas on the shooting of Albright.
As it so happens Bernardi has been doing some checking with his office. It seems that a mobster Stevens had helped put away. has just been released from prison. The mobster, Marc Lawrence, had sworn he would get even with Stevens. That is all Stevens needs to know. He heads out for some payback.
Taped to the window of his car is a note with an address. The note says that Lawrence is at said address. Into his car and on the gas leaps Stevens. The address turns out to be an old warehouse. Stevens rather foolishly rushes in where all he finds is gunman Crockett. Shots and fists are exchanged before a wounded Crockett bites concrete. The Police now arrive and collar both men.
It is only the pleading of Stevens friend, Lt Berandi that gets Stevens released. Stevens agrees to head home and cool off. Needless to say that does not happen. He is now grabbed up by gunsel, Armstrong. This time he is taken for a face to face with Lawrence. The meeting takes place at a closed merry go round of all places. Stevens manages to get a solid punch in on Armstrong and relieves him of his weapon. A gun battle ensues between Stevens and Lawrence with all rounds going wide. The two then step into each other, and start throwing fists. The thoroughly annoyed Stevens, gives Lawrence a world class curb stomping. Payback can be a brutal thing.
A truly excellent episode of a first-rate series. The directing chores were handled again by former feature film helmsman, Jack Arnold.
