Gunn is tipped;the soon-to-be visiting Governor will be assassinated. When the rumor is shared with Lt. Jacoby, there is a doubt as to the validity of this information since it comes from Gunn's "coterie of misguided souls".Further investigation is even more puzzling-a gun is found but no sniper. This is episode 70 from the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.
P.I. Peter Gunn, (Craig Stevens) is summoned by one of his many contacts for a meet. The snitch, beatnik, Herb Ellis has some info to pass on. The State Governor is to be assassinated during an upcoming visit. Stevens hits up several more underworld contacts who also admit they have heard rumblings of the same.
Stevens does his civic duty bit and contacts his friend, Police Lt Herschel Bernardi, with the info. Bernardi is a tad reluctant to call out the troops without any solid info of his own. But he can't afford to risk the info being true. A heavy Police presence is laid on at the airport arrival of the Governor and for his speech at same location.
While the Police are riding shotgun on the Government types, a bank hold-up with a million dollar take happens across town. Stevens and the Police have been duped. Stevens again makes the rounds of his underworld contacts etc. He manages to come up with a possible link to the robbery.
Stevens pays a visit to Forest Lewis, a teller at the bank that was raided. The man denies any involvement but is a tad on the nervous side for Stevens' liking. He calls Bernardi on his car phone, and suggests Bernardi send a car to bring Lewis in. Not 30 seconds later, a prowl car shows and Lewis is brought out and tossed in the back.
Stevens follows at a distance while he calls Bernardi again. Bernardi says he has not had a chance to send a car yet. The cops must be phony. Stevens follows the cop car to a garage where it pulls inside. Stevens calls in the address to Bernardi who grabs 7-8 uniform types and races to the address.
They bust in and catch the bank robbery gang loading the cash into the trunk of the Police car. Guns are drawn, used, and a pile of bodies are soon sprawled all over the floor. Only the gang leader, James Lanphier and the bank teller, Lewis are taken alive. Lewis is lucky because the gang had intended to kill him instead of giving him a cut of the proceeds.
Also in the cast are, Peter Whitney and Sterling Holloway. Holloway was known to millions as the voice of Winnie the Pooh.
This one is a sharp looking episode which supplies plenty of twists, curves and violence for the viewer.
