PETER GUNN – Kidnap - 1959

This is episode 46 from the 1958 to 61 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

John Lawrence walks into the Police Station and asks directions to Detective Lt Herschel Bernardi's office. He smiles, thanks the policeman for the info and proceeds down the hall to Bernardi's office. He enters same and draws a large automatic, which he holds to Bernardi's head. Lawrence tells Bernardi to get his hat and coat on as they are going for a drive. Out the station they stroll and into a waiting car.

P.I. Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) is enjoying an evening with his girl, Lola Albright on the couch. This happy experience is soon interrupted by a phone call. It is the Police calling, Stevens' buddy, Bernardi, is missing and they could use Stevens' help.

The mystery is soon uncovered as Lawrence calls the Station. It seems that Bernardi had arrested Lawrence's brother on a murder beef. The brother is due to be given the "Nevada Gas" that night at eleven. If the execution is not stopped, Lawrence will blow Bernardi's brains out. They have 8 hours to go.

Stevens quickly makes the rounds of several underworld contacts, Don Diamond and Pete Candoli. A name of a known associate of Lawrence pops up. The associate, Dick Crockett, is hiding out at his girl, Carmen Philips' apartment. Stevens is soon at the door and "invites" himself in. Crockett jumps Stevens and applies some pistol butt to the private detective's head. Then Crockett and Phillips beat the feet into the night.

A somewhat groggy Stevens soon tracks them down. But Crockett again manages to escape. The escape is rather short though as Crockett is nailed by a large car as he flees across the street. Stevens goes through the now dead Crockett's pockets. He finds a matchbook for a café on the outskirts of town. Stevens spares no horses on his way to the café.

He finds Richard Bakalyan, another associate of Lawrence, is the owner of the café. A rough round of questioning is needed before Bakalyan coughs up some info on Lawrence. Amazing what a pistol stuck in someone's eye will do to loosen the tongue. Stevens calls in some Police support and they all raid the address Bakalyan so helpfully supplied.

Lawrence and another thug are surprised by the arrival of Stevens and the Police. Guns are swiftly produced and gunfire splits the dark. Lawrence and his henchman quickly have their breathing arrangements altered, and not for the better. Lt Bernardi is found unharmed inside the house. Lawrence's brother keeps his date to sniff some cyanide.

Boy do they pack a lot into the 25 minute runtime of this episode. Series creator and producer, Blake Edwards supplied the story for this top episode. (b/w)
