PETER GUNN –Edie Finds a Corpse – 1959

This is episode 22 of the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who is always dressed with style. Regulars in the series are Hope Emerson as the owner of, MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright as Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

Singer Albright returns home from a day of shopping. She dumps her stuff and grabs an outfit for the club. She cranks on the shower and starts to peel off. Her eyes go wide as she sees a man sitting on the bottom of the shower stall. A dead man that is.

Albright is soon on the blower calling her boyfriend, Stevens. Horses are not spared as he roars over to Albright's apartment. He however goes to the wrong apartment. Albright has to call him down the stairs to the new place. Her old apartment is being painted.

Stevens has a quick look at the body and calls his friend, Police Lt Herschel Bernardi. He comes and likewise looks over the stiff. No blood? He must have been killed elsewhere and dumped here. But why? Albright says all the doors and windows were locked when she left. The man has no wallet but he does have a name etched on the back of his watch.

The man's identity and address are soon traced through the watch. Stevens pays a visit to the address. The only person there is Ruta Lee, the dead man's daughter. She tells Stevens that her father, a widower, has been missing for two days. He had been stepping out with a pretty young thing of late. The woman, Barbara Darrow, has been bleeding her father's bank accounts dry. Lee just happens to have Darrow's address.

Stevens does a quick check of same but finds the place has been left in a hurry. He has a word with the manager, Marg Bennett, she tells Steavens that Darrow had been sharing the place with Myron Healey. Healey is a real slime-ball, in Bennett's view. She does however have another address for Darrow. Strange, it is the same building as Albright's apartment.

Now we discover that Albright's new apartment had been the same one Darrow had rented before checking out two days before. Turns out that Darrow had never returned her extra key. Darrow and her real soul mate, Myron Healey, had killed Ruta Lee's father after he tumbled to their cash play. They had dumped the body thinking it would not be found for days. The two are tracked down and gobbled up for a date with a judge. (b/w)
