Candy Queen Claire Armstrong is a successful businesswoman who has created her business on a candy recipe her grandmother had given to her with the aid of Ed Purvis. Claire is breaking with Ed after he tried to tell her that her fiancé Mark Chester was no good. Something is amiss, however, when her cousin Wanda Buren is almost killed with poisoned candy and resort owner and gambler Harry Arnold is found dead in his office. Claire's fiancé Mark Chester had given Arnold the candy recipe as collateral against his $40,000 gambling debt and had tried to retrieve it when he heard Claire might notice it missing. He confronts Arnold with Claire's gun at his bungalow but Arnold takes the gun away from Chester who leaves. I Love Candy

Perry Mason's client in this episode is Nancy Gates known as the Candy Queen. It seems as though back in the day, grandmother willed Nancy the formula for some really great candy. So in the tradition of Imitation Of Life she got the stuff marketed and mass produced and the formula has made her rich.

But now the head of an illegal gambling house John Archer who's been romancing Gates gets the formula and tries to make a deal for it. He winds up dead and it's Gates looking good for it according to Richard Anderson who played the homicide cop in the last season of Mason and also DA William Talman.

In fact Raymond Burr is almost thrown for a loop when a man that William Hopper located perjures himself on direct examination. Of course it wouldn't be Perry Mason if he let that throw him for a loss.

The real culprit is one who is insanely jealous of Gates. I think you'll figure it out yourself before the end of the show.
