THE PEPSI COLA PLAYHOUSE – Girl in Distress – 1954

This is episode 63 of the 1953 to 1955 anthology series, THE PEPSI-COLA PLAYHOUSE.

William Phipps is a hard working guy who might have finally gotten a break in life. A distant relative has left him half of a rather large inheritance. The only problem is that the other half is going to Nelson Leigh, who is not amused with sharing. Phipps has just found out that Leigh is going to take the matter to court saying that Phipps is mentally unstable.

Phipps' girlfriend, Joanne Davis, now pays him a call. She is upset and crying. When asked what the problem is, Davis tells Phipps that she has just shot and killed her boss, Russ Conway. "You need to help me!" Davis begs. It seems that Conway attempted to have his way with the woman and Davis simply defended herself.

When Davis and Phipps reach the office they find, Paul Dubov already there. Dubov is a partner in business with Conway. He tells the two that he will take care of getting rid of the body for a fee. Otherwise the Police will be called. He hands Phipps a small automatic which Phipps carelessly handles. Dubov then tells Phipps to give the gun to Davis to dispose of. Needless to say, the gun will turn up later.

Of course it turns out the whole thing is a set-up to get at Phipps' inheritance. Everyone, even Phipps so called girlfriend is in on the deal. Leigh has offered them all cash if he can collect the whole inheritance. The scheme comes close to working, but is rumbled by, Onslow Stevens, a nosey cop who lives down the hall from Phipps.

This episode has more than enough plot to go around. There are circles inside circles inside circles in this one. Fun to watch.
