My favourite episode from the underrated series 'Paul Merton in Galton & Simpson's'
Married couple Jill and Steve have gone on holiday in a villa in Malaga with Jill's brother Gavin (an actor), Jill's Mother and their two children. Also in Spain is Jill's annoying know-it-all brother Paul, in a caravan. The weather is atrocious and it rains continuously whilst England is enjoying a heat-wave. Paul's caravan site gets washed out to sea so to the families horrors he has to stay with them in the villa. One rainy night the family are watching a film on the telly starring John Wayne. Paul sees a bit time player in it who he is convinced is Burt Reynolds. The family totally disagree with him, so he puts money on it. He looks in the Radio Times and doesn't see Burt Reynold's name, but this isn't putting him off, they don't put every-bodies name in the 'Radio Times' Still determined to prove he's right he rings a relative up who knows everything about films and she tells him it's not Burt Reynolds. He now desperately wants to prove himself right. The credits come up at the end and guess what- no Burt Reynolds. He still thinks he's right and goes as far as to ring Burt up himself. He gets through to somebody who tells him Burt will ring him at any minute. During this time Paul argues that Alfred Lord Tennyson was Lord Alfred Tennyson and that Anne Boleyn was Henry V111 third wife when Jane Seymour was. Then Burt Reynolds rings. Burt tells him that it wasn't him in the film. Paul doesn't even believe Burt and as the family go to bed, Paul stands at the phone arguing with Burt Reynolds.
A brilliant idea, no doubt about it. I know plenty of people like the character Merton portrayed in this, you know they are quite clearly wrong about something but they won't admit it and it frustrates you badly. Nigel Planer played Gavin who of course played Neil in 'The Young Ones' This idea originally starred that comedy legend Leonard Rossiter in an episode of 'The Galton & Simpson Playhouse' from 1977. I've never seen the original, but would love to.
Best Bit: GIRL: Dad, who was Henry V111 third wife, STEVE: Jane Seymour, PAUL: No Anne Boleyn was his third wife, STEVE: No it was Jane Seymour, Anne Boleyn was his second wife, PAUL: No that was Anne of Cleaves, STEVE: She was his fourth wife, PAUL: No that was Catherine Howard, STEVE: (Exploding) SHE WAS HIS FIFTH WIFE.
