PANIC – "Two Martinis" – 1957

This is episode eight from the 1957-1958 suspense series, PANIC! Each episode was a story about a person involved in an incident of stress and panic. The series ran for a total of 31 episodes.

In this story, businessman, Kent Taylor, has just been released after spending 10 weeks in a mental hospital. Workplace stress etc had caused a nervous breakdown. Before heading home, Taylor pays a visit to the apartment of his business partner, William Ching. Ching had asked him to stop so they could have a quick chat before Taylor went home.

Ching greets Taylor and invites him in for a martini. He hands Taylor a glass and then needs to answer the phone when it starts ringing. Taylor, not really wanting a drink, pours his into the glass Ching left on the table. Ching finishes his call and rejoins Taylor. "Bottoms up" he says and downs his glass.

About 30 seconds later Ching clutches his throat and keels over. Ching gasps out that he must have taken the wrong glass. He had intended to poison Taylor. Ching then drops dead and a small bottle of poison rolls out of his pocket. Taylor is shocked by the attempt on his life and his lucky escape. But why would his best friend and business partner try to kill him? He grabs up the poison bottle and heads to his own apartment. Taylors' wife, Peggy Knudsen, seems somewhat surprised by his arrival. Taylor explains what has happened. Knudsen of course thinks that maybe dear hubby has gone completely around the twist. Taylor finds a note asking Knudsen to call Ching later that night. Needless to say, Taylor now thinks that maybe Knudsen was in cahoots with Ching.

He grabs his hat and coat and bolts for some fresh air. He needs time to think this through. He heads for his club for a drink. Talking to the bartender, he is reminded about Ching's wife, Irene Hervey. It seems that Hervey and Ching had split up while Taylor was in the mental ward. He now speeds over to talk with Hervey.

He needs to find out if his wife and Ching had been stepping out together. This would explain the murder attempt on Taylor. Hervey sets him straight. Ching and herself had split because Ching had embezzled $80,000 in funds from the company. The night Taylor had found this out, is when Taylor suffered his nervous breakdown. Taylor had simply forgotten the event during his stay in hospital. Ching attempt at killing Taylor was to cover his trail it would seem.

A much better story than I'm making it sound. It throws more than enough red herrings and spit balls to keep the viewer guessing. Well worth a watch.
