When Violet and Chiltern are house guests at the Kennedys' Estate, the stresses on their dysfunctional marriage are pushed to the breaking point by Robert's obsession with money although Violet does agree to marry Chiltern. The Duke's vain romantic pursuit of Madame Goesler cause the frustrated nobleman to propose marriage to her in the ultimate effort to achieve intimacy. Glencora views the prospective marriage as a threat to Plantagenet's right to succession of the Omnium title and confides her fears to Madame Goesler, who ultimately turns the Duke down.
